The closer you get, the thinner the ice The cracks begin to appear If you push it too far, the eggshells will break And good friends become enemies Behind the veil of a Smile Darkness takes hold All reason is extinguished Behind the veil of a smile Bitterness ensues No light of reason shall pass through Festering in dark corners Fermenting in the shiraz The twisted cogs are turning faster Conspiracy theories gain momentum Misunderstandings become battles Behind the veil of a Smile Darkness takes hold All reason is extinguished Behind the veil of a Smile Bitterness ensues No light shall pass through Behind the veil of a Smile Resentment takes a tight grip All reason is extinguished Behind the veil of a smile Bitterness ensues No light of reason shall pass through Thoughts become twisted, reality slowly disappears Irrational emotions taking hold And suddenly with an ill-advised click of the mouse The touch paper is lit and this time bomb explodes Friendships lie in tatters Break the veil, you’ve got to break the veil Break the veil, you’ve got to break the veil Behind the veil of a Smile Darkness takes hold All reason is extinguished Behind the veil of a smile Bitterness ensues No light shall pass through Break down this veil of a smile Smash it to pieces Regain rationality Break down this veil of as smile Smash it to smithereens Regain reality

It only takes a second, it only takes a heart beat Another random action, a few small chosen words Maybe something on the TV, a conversation you have heard Something may happen to you, that you cannot explain It can change your life, it can change your life Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed A misplaced comment, too many words spoken Somebody over hearing, who shouldn’t have been there A heartfelt loving letter, left in the wrong location Opened by a daughter, results in devastation It can change your life, it can change your life Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed, Everything’s changed, Nothing, nothing will ever be the same Nothing will be the same ever again…ever again So many good intentions, thinking of what is best But instead, it all goes wrong, leaving an unholy mess Actions mean consequences Sometimes there’s no turning back A plain unassuming envelope left on the mantelpiece Innocuous enough or so it would seem But in the hands of the wrong person It’ll tear you apart It’ll shatter all your dreams It can change your life, it can change your life Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again Everything’s changed and nothing will ever be the same again, the same again The same again

Shadow Shadow There’s a shadow following me Shadow Shadow He is my past, my present and my future He is my conscience and holds all my thoughts He knows where I’m going before I have a clue He is my guiding light, my one and only truth There’s a shadow in the corner He’s sitting there looking at me He’s hanging over my shoulder Though I can only sense and cannot see My one and only truth Coincidences, circumstances Random or pre-ordained, who really knows? Instinctive or considered, Impulsive or contemplative Is it kismet or is it the luck of the draw? There’s a shadow in the corner He’s sitting there looking at me He’s hanging over my shoulder Though I can only sense and cannot see There’s something behind me I can’t quite make it out Shadow Shadow There’s a shadow following me Shadow Shadow There’s a shadow following me There’s a shadow in the corner He’s sitting there looking at me He’s hanging over my shoulder Though I can only sense, I cannot see There’s a shadow in the corner He’s sitting there looking at me He’s hanging over my shoulder Though I can only sense, I cannot see My only truth

The big boys, with their big toys and they’re shooting up the world They’re looking for a theatre which happens to be close to you You are part of the performance, you are part of the script And the scary thing is, there’s nothing you can do These big boys, these bully boys, will take away your homes They have no real compassion despite their twisted rhetoric They’ll squeeze you and they’ll choke you if you show an ounce of dissent They’ll burn you and they’ll torture you all in the name of peace Question, question, who drew the random lines in the sand? Question, question, who divided this sacred land? Friend become foe and fragile alliances crumble All hell breaks loose, the power struggles begin They tell us this, they tell that, it’s all a pack of lies Greed is rife, life is cheap so many more lies Lies, lies, lies, lies Lies, lies, lies, lies Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies They tell us this, they tell that, it’s all a pack of lies Greed is rife, life is cheap so many more will die Die, die, die, die Die, die, die, die Die, die, die, die, die Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why so many lies? Lies, lies, lies, lies Lies, lies, lies, lies Why so many lies? I like to think I’m full of love but I’m no dove and I’ll fight if I have to The big boys and their big toys, tearing the world apart The big boys and their big toys and this could just be the start So many wasted resources So much wasted time So much pointless posturing So many needless war crimes We reap what we sow Meddling with the status quo Will we never learn? Helpless, as our precious world burns, burns, burns…. Bickering, blaming, shouting, flaming Question, question, who drew the random lines in the sand? Question, question, who divided this sacred land? How about you show some humanitarian traits? For once in your power crazed lives So many wasted resources So much wasted time So much pointless posturing So many needless war crimes All you self-righteous, megalomaniacs you will all be damned And your dark empires will never last

Standing in a place that I should know But it doesn’t seem at all familiar I dare not move for a moment Whilst I’m trying to get some kind of bearing To recognize these shapes and these shadows I can see and thought I knew Now panic is setting in as I still can’t work it out And a mass of jumbled thoughts are running through my head Confusing and so disorientating And suddenly everything has all gone blank Recognition and communication systems appear to be failing The wiring inside me is slowly becoming faulty My being is slowly disappearing I’m filling up this thing that makes the water go hot To make some drinks for people in another room whose names escape me I know that I should know them but I don’t recognize their faces Even the words and the conversations seem so alien to me I don’t know who I am I can’t even recall my name I don’t know what I’ve ever done I don’t know where I’ve come from Although I feel warm and cozy in what I think is my home So many people around me are giving me so much love and affection But it makes me feel so nervous as I don’t know who I can trust Constantly Feeling anxious, constantly feeling afraid and alone I don’t know who I am I can’t even recall my name I don’t know what I’ve ever done I don’t know where I’ve come from No, I don’t know who I am I don’t even know about my history I can’t even think about my future I am just here in the now and that is all In rare moments of lucidity which pepper my universe of darkness Trying to piece together a world that I once knew, embraced and loved Trying to remember and picture those in my life who loved me too I hope so much that they are the ones who surround me now until I leave for the last time I don't remember, I don't recall I got no memory of anything at all Anything at all Goodnight Goodbye……

Darker Days 07:45
The ground beneath my feet is getting ever softer The fog is enveloping me and getting ever thicker The forest is closing in and getting ever darker My path is slowly disappearing and getting ever narrower Look out, look out, be careful where you step Darker Days are coming our way Be careful where you tread and what you say Darker days are racing this way Be careful what you do and who you flay Falling, falling, I can’t stop falling Calling out, I’m calling out, but no-one is listening I’m standing on the precipice Looking down in to an endless canyon Something is trying push me And I’m struggling to resist Got to take a step back but it seems I cannot move I need urgent assistance to help pull me back from the brink Look out, look out, got to watch where I go Darker Days are coming our way Be careful where you tread and what you say Darker days are racing this way Don’t become someone else’s prey Darker Days are coming our way Be careful where you tread and what you say Darker days are racing this way Be careful who you trust or you could pay Falling, falling, I feel like I’m falling Calling out, I’m calling out, but no-one is listening We are heading out of winter, every day is getting lighter But still it seems everything is still getting darker I feel that I’m in some kind of self-inflicted isolation I know I’ve got to try and get out of this scary situation But something in my mind is trying to stop me I must try and destroy this killing negativity I’m tired of all these darker days I’m tired of all these darker days Darker Days are coming our way Be careful where you tread and what you say Darker days are racing this way Don’t become someone else’s prey Darker Days are coming our way Be careful where you tread and what you say Darker days are racing this way Be careful who you trust or you could pay And then suddenly, quite unexpectedly, out in the distance I see a little light It’s just a pale pin spot but it’s burning so bright As I move forward the mist is slowly clearing And the fear inside of me is slowly disappearing Darker days are burning away

Open Water 04:08
Out here there are no tides Out here in the wide-open sea Although its beauty is to behold Nothing is happening and I’m getting so cold Opportunities to escape Range from few to nothing at all No sign of passing ships No phone to make that call And I’m trapped in open water, feeling bedraggled and becalmed I’m not drowning but I’m not moving and I’m feeling quite alarmed I look to the horizon To see if a vessel is in sight But there is nothing in my eyeline I don’t feel so water tight And the sun is beating down now My head is getting hot But my toes are frightfully cold I’m just a little insignificant dot And I’m trapped in open water, feeling bedraggled and becalmed I’m not drowning but I’m not moving and I’m feeling quite, yes I’m feeling quite alarmed Not sure how long I can survive Treading water in this blue My body strength is waning I’m not sure that I can pull through Then suddenly my eyes can see And I’m back again in my other reality I’ve survived yet another day On dry land Oh lucky me, oh lucky me

about

This latest opus, the band’s twelfth studio album, was recorded before, during and after the recent Covid emergency, and, as was the case with the previous album ‘The Last Great Adventurer’, was recorded at several locations over the last couple of years by the various band members and was finally edited, mixed and mastered, as usual, by our engineer/producer supreme Karl Groom (Threshold/Dragonforce/Pendragon/Arena/Yes etc.).

The album features the same line-up as TLGA of Stu Nicholson (vocals), Dean Baker (keyboards), Spencer Luckman (drums), Lee Abraham (guitars) and Mark Spencer (bass guitar).

As usual, a variety of topics are considered and written about on this album, some very personal, including the title track in which the ageing process and the difficult and tricky subject of early onset dementia is tackled, hopefully with a certain amount of poignancy.
